  7.      This document describes the means for setting up your Sound Card for
  8.      proper operation under the OS/2 operating system environment. If you
  9.      already have OS/2 installed, please read PART 1; if not, please
  10.      proceed to PART 2 of this document. PART 3 of this document describes
  11.      how to connect your existing or new CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card
  12.      and provides a list of the CD-ROM models that are supported. PART 4
  13.      describes the parameter options for the Sound Card setup program
  14.      MAD16.ADD and PART 5 describes a brief trouble-shooting session for
  15.      problems that may be encountered during and after the installation of
  16.      the Sound Card setup program.

  18.      Please note that the OS/2 Warp (Version 3.0) environment is assumed
  19.      throughtout this document. If you have older versions of OS/2, the
  20.      following steps may be applied accordingly to the Multimedia setup
  21.      utilities provided by the older versions.

  23.      Included with this README.1ST file and the MAD16.ADD Sound Card setup
  24.      program is an example CONFIG.SYS file called CONFIG.TMP. The user may
  25.      use it as a reference for updating their own CONFIG.SYS file.

  52. PART 1 - OS/2 already installed

  54.         Installing the Sound Card Setup program:
  55.  
  56.         1. Ensure that your Sound Card has been properly installed and power
  57.            on your system and wait for the OS/2 Desktop to appear.
  58.  
  59.         2. Insert the diskette containing the Sound Card Setup program
  60.            MAD16.ADD into your floppy disk drive.
  61.  
  62.         3. From your OS/2 Desktop, open (double click) the OS/2 System folder
  63.            and then open the Command Prompts folder.
  64.  
  65.         4. Open either the OS/2 Window icon or the OS/2 Full Screen icon to
  66.            start an OS/2 command prompt session.
  67.  
  68.         5. At the command prompt, type "a:" or "b:" to change to your floppy
  69.            disk drive that contains the setup program.
  70.  
  71.         6. From your floppy disk drive, type "copy MAD16.ADD C:\OS2\BOOT" to
  72.            copy the MAD16.ADD setup program from your floppy disk drive to
  73.            your OS/2 boot directory.
  74.  
  75.         7. Type "c:" to get back to your c drive and type "tedit config.sys".
  76.            This will bring up the CONFIG.SYS file for editing. Press the
  77.            Esc (Escape) key to edit the file.
  78.  
  79.         8. Insert the following line to the first line of your CONFIG.SYS file:

  81.             BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD MODE:sb BASE:220 SBIRQ:5 SBDMA:1 SBVER:3
  82.  
  83.            This sets up your Sound Card to Sound Blaster Pro compatible mode
  84.            with I/O Base address at 220 Hex, Interrupt Request at 5, and DMA
  85.            Request at 1.
  86.  
  87.            Note: Your Sound Card may also be configured for use with a CD-ROM.
  88.                  To setup your Sound Card to interface with a CD-ROM, please
  89.                  refer to PART 3 of this document.

  92.         9. Verify that the syntax is correct and press the F2 key to save the
  93.            file. Press the F3 key to exit the editor.
  94.  
  95.         10. Type "exit" to get back to your OS/2 desktop and proceed to install
  96.             a Sound Blaster Pro compatible driver included in OS/2.

  100.         Installing a Sound Blaster Pro compatible driver included in OS/2:
  101.  
  102.         1. From your OS/2 System folder, open the System Setup folder.
  103.  
  104.         2. From your System Setup folder, open Selective Install.
  105.  
  106.         3. The System Configuration window will pop up and the list of
  107.            installable items will appear.
  108.  
  109.         4. Click on the icon next to the Multimedia Device Support field to
  110.            select the Sound Blaster Pro compatible driver.
  111.  
  112.         5. A window with the list of supported audio drivers will be
  113.            displayed. Select a Sound Blaster Pro compatible driver from the
  114.            list of displayed drivers and click on ADD. If the driver has
  115.            already been auto-detected, it will be displayed on the box on
  116.            the right hand side.
  117.  
  118.         6. Click on "Device Settings..." to setup the hardware settings for
  119.            the Sound Blaster Pro compatible driver. The settings should
  120.            correspond to the settings specified in the
  121.            "BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD..." line in your CONFIG.SYS file. Click on OK
  122.            to confirm.

  124.         7. From your System Configuration window, click on OK to start the
  125.            installation for your Sound Blaster Pro compatible driver.
  126.            A window will pop-up displaying the list of items to be installed.
  127.            Ensure that the Multimedia Software Support check box is enabled
  128.            (checked); if not, click on it and click on INSTALL to start the
  129.            installation.

  131.         8. At this point, you will be prompted for your OS/2 installation
  132.            diskette or CD-ROM containing the Sound Blaster Pro compatible
  133.            driver included in OS/2.
  134.  
  135.         9. After the installation is complete, shut down OS/2 and reboot your
  136.            system for the changes to take effect. After the system is
  137.            rebooted, you are now ready for games and multimedia applications.
  138.  
  139.            NOTE: After your Sound Card has been installed and configured,
  140.                  your system may have devices (printers, network) which
  141.                  might conflict with your Sound Card. Find out what Hardware
  142.                  resources your other devices may be using (I/O Ports,
  143.                  Interrupts, DMAs) and avoid these settings for your
  144.                  Sound Card.

  150. PART 2  - OS/2 not installed

  152.         OS/2 Diskette Installation:
  153.  
  154.         1. Install OS/2 and proceed to PART 1 to complete the setup for your
  155.            Sound Card.

  158.         OS/2 CD-ROM Installation:
  159.  
  160.         If you intend to connect a CD-ROM to the CD-ROM interface of your
  161.         sound card and use it for your OS/2 Warp installation, please follow
  162.         the steps below. If not, install your CD-ROM with the interface card
  163.         supplied by your CD-ROM manufacturer and proceed to install OS/2 Warp,
  164.         after your installation, proceed to PART 1 of this document to
  165.         complete the setup for your Sound Card.

  167.         1. In the OS/2 Warp CD-ROM installation package, you will find two (2)
  168.            "kicker" diskettes - a) Installation Diskette for CD-ROM, and
  169.                                 b) Diskette for CD-ROM (Disk 1).
  170.  
  171.         2. Copy the program MAD16.ADD located in your Sound Card Setup program
  172.            diskette to the OS/2 Warp "kicker" diskette labeled "Diskette for
  173.            CD-ROM (Disk 1)".
  174.  
  175.         3. Use an editor to edit the CONFIG.SYS file located in the same
  176.            "kicker" diskette (DISK 1) and insert the following line to the
  177.            first line of the CONFIG.SYS file:

  179.      BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD MODE:sb BASE:220 SBIRQ:5 SBDMA:1 SBVER:3 CDTYPE:<model>
  180.  
  181.             where <model> is one of the following characters:
  182.                           S               - stands for SONY
  183.                           M               - stands for Mitsumi
  184.                           P               - stands for Panasonic
  185.                           I               - stands for IDE (secondary)

  187.            This sets up your Sound Card to Sound Blaster Pro compatible mode
  188.            with I/O Base at 220 Hex, Interrupt Request at 5, DMA Request
  189.            at 1, and CD-ROM model to one which is supported by your Sound card.
  190.            To determine if your CD-ROM is supported by your Sound Card's
  191.            interface, please refer to PART 3 of this document for a list of
  192.            CD-ROM drives that are supported.

  194.            Verify that the syntax is correct and save the file. At this point,
  195.            you are ready to install the CD-ROM version of OS/2 Warp. Ensure
  196.            that your CD-ROM has been connected properly to the Sound Card
  197.            before starting the installation. After the installation is
  198.            complete, you will need to reboot your system for the new settings
  199.            to take effect. After the system is rebooted, you are now ready for
  200.            games and multimedia applications.

  202.            NOTE: If you are upgrading your present operating system to OS/2,
  203.                  you may use an existing editor provided by your operating
  204.                  system to edit the above mentioned files such as the
  205.                  MS-DOS Editor.

  212. PART 3 - CD-ROM Drive Interface
  213.  
  214.         Interfacing a CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card:
  215.  
  216.         To interface/connect your new or existing CD-ROM drive to your
  217.         sound card, please follow the simple steps below.
  218.  
  219.         If you are interfacing an existing CD-ROM drive to your sound card,
  220.         you only need to follow steps 1 and 2 below since you should already
  221.         have your existing CD-ROM driver setup in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  222.         However, if your are interfacing a new CD-ROM drive, you will need
  223.         to follow all 3 steps below; in which case, it is recommended that
  224.         your perform step 1 first.

  227.         1) Hardware setup
  228.  
  229.            To connect your CD-ROM drive to your sound card, you will need
  230.            to setup the correct data connector cable from your CD-ROM to
  231.            your sound card. Please refer to your sound card installation
  232.            manual for more details.

  235.         2) Modifying/Setting the MAD16.ADD setup program
  236.  
  237.            To interface your new or existing CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card,
  238.            use an editor to open the CONFIG.SYS file for editing and locate
  239.            the line "BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD..."  This line should be at the first
  240.            line of the file. Insert the following "CDTYPE:" option into the
  241.            line and when completed, it should read:
  242.  
  243.             BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD MODE:sb ..... CDTYPE:<model>
  244.  
  245.            where <model> is the CD-ROM model denoted by the following characters:
  246.                        S       - stands for SONY
  247.                        M       - stands for Mitsumi
  248.                        P       - stands for Panasonic
  249.                        I       - stands for IDE (secondary)
  250.  
  251.            For example, the following enables the interface for a SONY CD-ROM.

  253.             BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD MODE:sb ......  CDTYPE:S
  254.  
  255.            If the above MAD16.ADD line is not located, proceed to PART 1 of
  256.            this document for details on installing the Sound Card setup program.
  257.  
  258.            Save the file and proceed to install the CD-ROM driver if needed.

  261.         3) Installing the CD-ROM driver
  262.  
  263.            Open the Selective Install program located in the System Setup
  264.            folder and click on the icon next to the "CD-ROM Device Support"
  265.            entry.  A window with the list of OS/2 supported CD-ROM drivers
  266.            will appear. Select (click on) the CD-ROM driver name belonging
  267.            to your CD-ROM model and click on OK to confirm. Click on OK to
  268.            start your CD-ROM driver installation.
  269.  
  270.            If you have already succesfully connected your CD-ROM drive
  271.            to your sound card as detailed in your installation manual, you
  272.            may shut down OS/2 and reboot your system for the changes to
  273.            take effect. If not, please proceed to connect your CD-ROM drive
  274.            to your sound card after shutting down OS/2 and switching off
  275.            your system.

  305.         that the drive is compatible with any of the above MAKE and MODELs.
  306.         Contact the CD-ROM manufacturer for details on the compatibility of
  307.         your drive. If your drive is compatible, the drive may be specified
  308.         as the appropriate TYPE in the CDTYPE option.

  314. PART 4 - Options for MAD16.ADD Sound Card Setup Program

  316.         The following lists the available options for the MAD16.ADD
  317.         sound card setup program.
  318.  
  319.         MODE:    wss, sb   (Sound Card mode, Sound Blaster (sb) or
  320.                             Windows Sound System (wss) default is wss)
  321.  
  322.         BASE:    220, 240  (Sound Blaster I/O Base address, default is 220)
  323.                  530, E80, F40, 604 (Windows Sound System ..., default is 530)
  324.  
  325.         SBIRQ:   5, 7, 10  (Sound Blaster Interrupt, default is 5)

  327.                  The audio and CD-ROM interrupt selections must be different.

  355. PART 5 - Brief Trouble-Shooting Session
  356.  
  357.         Problem:  OS/2 cannot detect your sound card and/or CD-ROM
  358.         Solution: Ensure that the BASEDEV=MAD16.ADD... line is located at the
  359.                   very first line of your CONFIG.SYS file.
  360.  
  361.         Problem:  No startup sound when starting OS/2
  362.         Solution: Check if System Sound is enabled
  363.  
  364.         Problem:  Sounds keep repeating
  365.         Solution: This is due to an interrupt conflict on your system. To
  366.                   use a different interrupt selection, open the CONFIG.SYS
  367.                   file for editing and change the SBIRQ option in the
  368.                   MAD16.ADD line to a different interrupt. Be sure also to
  369.                   specify the same option for the Sound Blaster Pro
  370.                   compatible driver line as well. The Sound Blaster Pro
  371.                   compatible driver line is usually denoted by:
  372.                   C:\MMOS2\SBP2D2.SYS...
  373.  
  374.         Problem:  DOS games do not work under OS/2 DOS session
  375.         Solution: Run OS/2 Add Programs located in the System Setup folder
  376.                   to ask OS/2 to add the set of DOS games on your system.
  377.                   This allows OS/2 to setup the DOS session settings best
  378.                   suited for your individual games such as DOOM.
  379.  
  380.                   If the DOS game still does not run, this may be due to
  381.                   the incompatibility of the game with OS/2. Consult the
  382.                   OS/2 newsgroup - comp.os.os2.games on the internet for
  383.                   FAQs relating to this subject, or the FTP site -
  384.                   hobbes.nmsu.edu.
  385.  
  386.         Problem:  IDE CD-ROM does not work
  387.         Solution: Ensure that the IDE CD-ROM jumper is closed on your sound
  388.                   card. Consult your sound card manual for details.
